January 2011 ~ Alcatraz New Years Day Swim

Alcatraz ~ New Years Day Swim

Following is a video of Tom New Years Day Alcatraz swim that his friend made.

They decided to start swimming as soon as they got off the boat.As you can see, they definitely were not in a straight line. The tide determines where they aim.Sometimes fast swimmers can aim at the opening because they can beat the tide change if the tide velocity is not that bad but they too get pushed east or west a little on the way.The Saturday before New Years, Tom aimed at the Ship Jeremiah O’Brien way east of the opening and still got pushed slightly past the opening to Aquatic Park when the strong ebb tide kicked in.

On New Years Day, the water was about 52 degrees and choppy at first but it smoothed out for the second half. It took Tom about 44 minutes.“Thanks to our coach Janine I was swimming strong and finished in about the middle of the pack".  Some swimmers had wetsuits and fins but were not documented in the results.

Tom believes he was at least 5 minutes faster than he would have been before joining AquaSol.He now feels much more efficient in the water.

The next day he jumped off the Fort Mason Pier and swam past Aquatic Park along the breakwater and turned to swim against the flood tide.

Happy New Year, Tom Happy New Year, Tom
